"Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us. " - Oscar Wilde Photography records a place and time for posterity, while memory preserves personal connections to past experiences. Photographs serve to trigger memories and recall circumstances of events more distinctly. These recollections bring back scenes from daily life and other documented adventures. Through the combined use of photography and collage the exhibited works take the likenesses of a photograph one step further to encompass the overall impression of a place that comes to mind when looking back on an event. The photographs serve as a basis to introduce the exhibited views, while painting the rest of the story generally leads to a play on perspective. Each piece presents a window into a combination of fact, depicted by the incorporated photos, and of memory, rendered in layers to smooth the transition from reality. The image begins with the hard evidence of photographs to establish the validity of the experience. Then it is built up with paper, paints, pastels, and pencils; much like the process of remembering – one thought triggers another memory along the same lines and the documented edges smudge to form a single view of an overall event. These collaged works strive to create a more complete sense of place by combining different aspects of an area onto a singular visual surface. In this manner it is possible for the viewer to identify with the observation, as if they were looking onto the landscape of an experience.
